It reads like a story book that’s been elevated for middle and high schoolers. While the situation is a bit creepy and something we may not be able to relate to, we can definitely relate to them as they explore the different themes on their journey.ĭoll Bones is very unique to read and I love the style it’s written in. Another great element of the novel is the character development we see as Zach, Alice, and Poppy go on their adventure. Also, the fairy-tale scenery adds to the story and keeps readers interested. They were also beautiful and kept me engaged by depicting the characters as they went along in their journey. They really contributed to the dark, sort of creepy mood of the novel. I absolutely loved the addition of illustrations throughout the novel. Is the doll really haunted? Can they make it to the graveyard? Will their friendship survive the quest? The three catch a bus in the middle of the night and the quest begins. The only way to stop the ghost from haunting Poppy is to bury her with her family in the next state over. She tells them the doll is made from the bones of Eleanor Kerchner, a young girl who was murdered and has come to her in a dream. She takes the doll from the cabinet and in the middle of the night she talks her friends into one last quest. Poppy notices the changes in her friends and is afraid they are growing apart so she plans one last adventure. Zach is upset with his father but instead of telling his friends the truth he tells them he cannot play anymore. Zach’s father thinks he is too old to play with dolls and throws away all his action figures. The three are growing up: Zach has joined the basketball team and Alice is starting to talk about boys. She rules over all nations in their make-believe land. Poppy, Alice, and Zachary find the doll to be creepy and named her The Queen. Poppy’s mom has an antique bone china doll that she locks in a glass cabinet but doesn’t allow her to touch. Their favorite game is playing make-believe with dolls and action figures and creating adventurous stories. Poppy Bell, Alice Magnaye, and Zachary Barlow are 12 years old and have been best friends for years.
